Based on the 900MHz Intel Celeron processor and weighing a mere 920
grams, the Eee PC is the perfect size to carry around in a small bag,
or even by hand. If you travel economy often or are in places where
sitting is a cramped luxury, this is the laptop to get work done
comfortably. Now while this laptop is being ostensibly targeted at
school children, housewives, senior citizens and teenagers, I can see a
string of executives picking this up as well, to serve as a convenient
travel laptop. Size wise, it is a compelling proposition. The build is
sturdy and well put together, and has a general feeling of being able
to take the tumbles of the average student. Sporting a glossy,
pearl-white finish, the exterior of the Eee is a fingerprint magnet,
though much less so than the glossy VAIOs and the MacBook.
Under the hood, the Eee PC 4G model sports 512MB of DDR2 RAM and
instead of a roomy hard disk that other laptops feature, makes do with
a 4GB SSD (Solid State Drive) – a storage deivices that uses memory
chips to store data, rather than disk platters a la conventional hard
disks. With no moving parts, a solid state drive is usually more
robust, silent and tends to be faster by by removing mechanical delays
associated with a conventional hard disk drive. Add to that a
0.3-megapixel webcam and integrated microphone, with network
connectivity provided by 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and 10/100 Ethernet. Given its
size, the connectivity options are excellent, with 3 USB ports, an
MMC/SD memory card reader and a port for an external monitor.
Then again, we’ve seen many products that look good on paper, but fail
the usability test. To be considered a viable alternative for any
amount of serious work, three areas have to pass muster – the keyboard,
the screen and the operating system – under regular use. The keyboard
on the Eee PC is rather good, given the size of the machine, and after
the initial learning curve and the trial-and-error, one gets up to
speed with the quirks of the keyboard posing no more of a challenge
than switching from one full sized laptop to another. Expect a few
missed keys or incorrect passwords till you get it right though. Like
the keyboard, the Eee touchpad is very small and will require users to
adapt a little bit.
The custom Linux based operating system on the Eee is divided into
Internet, Work, Learn, Play, Settings and Favourites tabs categories.
The Work tab has the rather capable Open Office on hand for all your
office productivity needs, with Adobe Reader and Thunderbird for your
PDFs and emails. Multimedia playback is excellent, with format support
for DivX and Xvid video and all the other regular formats. In fact, the
Learn tab surprised with the number of educational software included -
programs for students at several different age levels, including a
basic math game, an advanced function plotter, a typing tutor, and a
planetarium, among others. I can see most kids taking to such stuff
rather happily.
Over at the Internet tab, Asus has thoughtfully loaded a number of
applications – Skype, a multi-protocol chat client and Firefox. It’s
when you start using the internet that you realize that the screen
resolution at 800×480 just doesn’t cut if for many complex websites,
leaving you to scroll more often than you read. Using LED backlighting
to conserve power, the screen is bright and crisp, except when you’re
outdoors and in direct sunlight.
What you do get is rather snappy response times from the applications
(even more so given its rather humble hardware), and the SSD ensures
boot times are in the region of under 30 seconds. Also remember, being
based on Linux, you can ask some of the more clued-in teenagers around
you to install pretty much any application that runs on Linux, which
suddenly opens the doors to innumerable open-source, and free programs.
Or, you can just install Windows XP should you wish – Asus provides all
the hardware drivers along with the Eee. The more intrepid amongst you
(read: willing to void the warranty) can also open up the panel on the
bottom and upgrade the RAM on this baby.
In the end, the Eee PC can easily be overlooked for what it lacks – an
optical CD/DVD drive and high-specced hardware. It’s difficult for me
not to recommend the Eee PC for all but the most demanding users, and
even more at this spectacular price of Rs. 18,000 (MRP). This is the
sweet spot that the laptop industry’s been missing all along.
